Richard Vine was born in the Finger Lakes region of New York State and began working at Pleasant Valley Wine Company in 1958. He started in the cellar, moved to the laboratory, and then became a winemaker with a production of over six million bottles annually. In 1977, he accepted a research position at Mississippi State University, where he earned his doctorate and wrote a series of volumes on wine. Since 1991, he has been a professor of enology at Purdue University.
For twenty-one years, he was a wine consultant for American Airlines flights.
